Let's begin by understanding what cellulite is:

Cellulite describes a condition that occurs in most women, where the skin of the lower limbs, abdomen, and pelvic region becomes dimpled. This condition typically appears after puberty and has a hormonal component to its presentation. In women, cellulite is typically located in very specific areas, namely: buttocks and hips, the inner part of the thighs, the knees, the area under the belly button, the back of the arms, and sometimes even the neck.

What are the main causes of cellulite?

Changes in metabolism, hormonal factors, as well as changes in physiology such as gender specific dimorphic skin architecture, are believed to be involved. Furthermore, there is significant genetic and ethnic predisposition to cellulite (i.e. does your mom have cellulite?)
Indeed, cellulite is tied to the number, size and arrangement of fat cells located beneath the dermis. Excess fat in the superficial fat cells is what enlarges them and starts the cellulite creation process. Fat in those fat cells is the end-result of overeating and/or inactivity, as we all know.

However, for the cellulite phenomenon to occur we also need estrogen. This is what creates the cellulite architecture in the deeper layers of the skin and stimulates the proliferation of superficial fat cells. Estrogen on its own is not enough to cause cellulite, neither excess calories on their own – only the combination can lead to cellulite.

Sedentary living and inactivity, even in the presence of the perfect diet, will worsen the appearance of cellulite as it favors the growth of fat cells at the expense of collagen cells. Inactivity also leads to poor circulation and lymph drainage, further aggravating cellulite.

What type of treatments have been shown to be effective in improving the appearance of cellulite?

The best treatments are the ones that…
•…primarily target the most important cause of cellulite: FAT!
•…are vigorous. Light, mild treatments will not do much.
•…combine two, three or more approaches.
